Steps Forward

From now on, I'm tracking how long this Newsletter takes to write - in Steps. Not time.

Got myself a treadmill under my standing desk - and I started walking when I opened the laptop to start working on this weeks post.

Today β†’ 13,453 Steps.

NEAT or Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis can burn upwards of 800 calories per day! ...so those who fidget, "can't keep still" or stand up for longer periods can potentiallyΒ burn < 38% more energy! ...also, my body doesn't like sitting still for hours on end!

That is Wild.

πŸ“– This Week's Read / Listen

Listening to David Goggins is a kick up the butt. Being honest. He's like the voice I need in my head when it's cold and raining out - and lacing up those shoes and getting after it, is just that little bit harder.

His new book, Never FinishedΒ is theΒ follow-upΒ to Can't Hurt Me - which is a wild journey into Goggins' life and story of transformation and unbelievable achievements - against the odds.

He is still the only member of the U.S. Armed Forces to complete SEAL training, Army Ranger School, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller training.

Goggins has also completed more than seventy ultra-distance races (races greater than marathon in distance - on foot!), often placing in the top-five. And he's a former Guinness World Record holder for completing 4,030 pull-ups in seventeen hours.

What I truly value in David's message is that he promotes the use of our dark times as an opportunity for growth and learning. No-one gets out of life without hardship along the way.

If we can shift towards our perspective towards purposeful suffering, the long-term results include resilience, strength and experience.

Breathing is a powerful, accessible tool capable of calming your stress, reducing your pain and managing your emotions.

This week April and I having been looking deeper into intentionalΒ breathing and building a consistent breath-work practice into our day. Because - as we all know - breathing and deep focus - even for a few minutes daily - yield some pretty incredible benefits over time.

😌 Instant Stress Relief

...this is one of my favourite techniques - and my go-to if anxiety does gett on top of me β†’

The Physiological Sigh

  • Take a long, deep breath in through your nose

  • Subtle pause at the top

  • ...then another short sharp inhale - again through your nose to really re-inflate those lungs

  • Follow with an extended, controlled exhale

  • Repeat as required

...this offloads a large amount of carbon dioxide and resets your heart rate - studies have proven that just 1-3 repetitions of this protocol can reduce stress very fast.
